Who we are
The Ulster Society Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is a Charity dedicated to the objective clearly stated in its title, ‘The Prevention of Cruelty and the Relief of Suffering.’
Founded in 1827 it is the second oldest animal welfare charity in the world, the oldest being the RSPCA, our counterpart in England and Wales.
It began life as a Belfast Society formed by a group of concerned citizens to counter the abuse of animals, particularly working horses, commonplace on the city’s streets. Success followed with many abusers brought before the Courts and prosecuted. The Charity extended its work across the entire Province of Ulster and the name was changed to reflect this expansion.
The right to call the Ulster Society an SPCA is earned by our commitment to and compliance with the core values of our sister organisations around the world. ‘The Five Freedoms’ appearing on the homepage are a clear and concise statement of those objectives.
A report dealing with the previous year activities is published annually.
